A Lunar Calendar for Zanzibar

All Zanzibar life and culture follows the cycle of the moon – So we bring to you our latest lunar calendar to help you navigate tides and tidal ecosystems, Islamic festivals and even social gatherings.

Lives and livelihoods depend on it – from fishing communities to boat-based tourist excursions and even farmers’ planting and harvesting schedule. The same Swahili word – Mwezi – means both moon and month.

We are therefore very pleased to offer our new Lunar Calendar for 2025, custom designed for Zanzibar. While we all see the same moon and phase wherever we are in the world, our unique calendar shows how the moon appears from Zanzibar. It includes local eclipse dates, Zanzibar and Tanzanian holidays, and shows when when the full moon will rise on the eastern horizon, and when we can look for the new moon that heralds the start of each holy month.
